Learn by Doing: A Resource for Volunteering, Internships and other Opportunities

Up the River Endeavors believes empowerment comes through education. Experiential learning, or learning by doing, is an excellent education approach. This site is designed to help provide you with information about various hands-on learning experiences offered throughout the United States. Right now, our directory will link you to several organizations that offer environmental, conservation, and animal rights internships and volunteer opportunities. In the future, the directory will link to organizations that help promote issues that all URE members are involved with.

If you don't see your organization here and are interested in being added to our site please contact the webmaster at web@uptheriverendeavors.org

Internships

What is an Internship?
An internship is an opportunity for students to gain practical work experiences that compliments and augments his or her academic goals. Often times colleges/universities will help students find internships or may even offer internships at their school. Receiving college credit while working an internship is often a possibility, and a salary or stipend may also be provided depending on the employer. Internships are sometimes also available for high school students. Positions are available throughout the year, but in most cases are offered during the summer.

Why an Internship?
No only are internships a fantastic experiential learning opportunity, but they offer a variety of other benefits as well. Internships allow you to develop new skills, expand your knowledge in a given field, test your career choice on the job, meet professionals in your field, and make yourself more marketable to future employers. Internships also give you the opportunity to apply what you've learned in the classroom, possibly earn college credit, and you might even get paid to learn!

Volunteer

What is a Volunteer?
A volunteer is a person that voluntarily offers to provide a service or help in another fashion. Volunteers usually do not receive pay, but in some cases you may be compensated for your services.

Why Volunteer?
There are several great reasons to become a volunteer. Volunteering, like, interning, is a great experiential learning opportunity. Even though you won't be paid for your services, you will still be gaining valuable skills, knowledge and experience. Volunteering also says a lot about your character and your devotion to a certain cause. This dedication is a great resume builder and can be a very desirable quality to prospective employers. Overall, volunteering isn't just a great way of giving, it's a great way of receiving as well.
