Women's Action for New Directions

WAND was founded in 1982 as Women's Action for Nuclear Disarmament. With the end of the cold war, we became Women's Action for New Directions, and have been dedicating our energies to redirect federal budget priorities away from the military and toward human needs. WAND empowers women to act politically to reduce violence and militarism, and redirect excessive military resources toward unmet human and environmental needs.

Zoological Society of Milwaukee

Central to its mission to conserve wildlife populations around the world, the Zoological Society of Milwaukee initiated a program in 1988 to preserve the bonobo (Pan paniscus) or pygmy chimpanzee. The bonobo is the most endangered of the great apes, and it is found only in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Working in partnership with the Congolese government and national conservation agencies, the Society's program aims to assess and protect surviving bonobo populations while empowering Congolese conservationists to obtain the necessary skills and means to conserve their natural heritage.
