Zoological Society of Milwaukee Central to its mission to conserve wildlife populations around the world, the Zoological Society of Milwaukee initiated a program in 1988 to preserve the bonobo (Pan paniscus) or pygmy chimpanzee. The bonobo is the most endangered of the great apes, and it is found only in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Working in partnership with the Congolese government and national conservation agencies, the Society's program aims to assess and protect surviving bonobo populations while empowering Congolese conservationists to obtain the necessary skills and means to conserve their natural heritage.
